chunking
Splitting a source document into smaller passages before embedding or indexing, so retrieval returns something small enough to be precise and large enough to still make sense on its own.
context compaction
Replacing the older half of a conversation with a summary of it, so a long-running agent can keep working past the context window.
context engineering
Deciding which tokens go into the context window on every call: instructions, tools, retrieved data, history and tool results, and what gets cleared or summarised as a session grows.
context window
The per-request token ceiling that the prompt, the history, the tool definitions and the reply all share.
